Ashworth

Manchester United remain at least £13 million apart from Newcastle in their negotiations over a compensation agreement for sporting director Dan Ashworth, Telegraph Sport understands.

Newcastle want around £15 million plus a further £5 million in add-ons for Ashworth, who is currently on gardening leave after stepping down as the club’s sporting director in February amid the interest from Old Trafford.

United are proposing compensation around the £2 million mark, similar to the fee Newcastle paid to prise Ashworth away from Brighton two years ago and less than the £4 million reported at the time.

These guys are absolutely hilarious, since when did we start valuing sporting directors the same as footballers? I mean add-ons ffs

It looks like this window we’re gonna be working without Ashworth because the club look like they’re happy to play the long game here, and rightly so if Newcastle are being this pathetic.

Ashworth doesn’t identify transfer targets so it’s not that important that he’s brought in before the summer.

That's Wilcox then?

Yep.

Nope.

Itl be a combination of the manager, Ashworth, Chief Scout and maybe Wilcox.

What would have happened if Dan Ashworth resigned from Newcastle because he had accepted a job at a company in a completely different industry, e.g. Shell or Microsoft or Amazon?

Would they be expected to pay compo?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Depends on the terms of his contract, but it is doubtful.

If we walked away now and went for someone else Newcastle would be in a world of trouble. They'd have a top Exec who doesn't want to be there on gardening leave.

Don't get fleeced Jim. Call their bluff and threaten to walk away. £20m for a sporting director is absolutely insane.

Clearly Jim is doing just that, and we will inevitably get him for somewhere in the middle.

Wilcox role is to introduce things that will improve teams and individuals at all levels. Not particularly recruitment.
